Who does not want to lose weight? Let me tell you the people who do not want to lose weight, they are the people who actually do not have much weight to be reduced. Apart from them, everyone else wants to lose weight.
Why? Because losing weight solves a lot of problems. I am not even going to start this with the problems such as obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart-related issues, I am actually referring to the problems that people face on their way to the lala land – stopped by the obesity police.
Jane wants to be a model, but only if models were with massive love handles and sagging bellies, Jane would get a chance to be a model.
Julie wants to go to dance school and she’s got a thing for dancing, but unfortunately her legs do not cooperate with her.
Jason wants to go hiking; he is in love with lush green meadows, gushing waters and snow-peaked mountains, but unfortunately with his body weight, even the minimalist backpack will take him as far as a few miles.
So, all of these people + the people who have life threatening health issues because of obesity want to reduce their weight through intermittent fasting or any other techniques. Lest we underrate the health issues caused by obesity, they include but are not limited to type 2 diabetes, heart strokes and other issues, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, kidney-related issues, problems with pregnancy and even different types of cancer.
So all these problems can be taken care of by losing a few pounds or kilos. However, there is something about obesity; it is very stubborn and once it makes its place, it does not leave it easily. Fats are not made to be dissolved easily. Intermittent fasting is one of the few amazing and organic methods of fat loss, but there are five major misconceptions that people have about intermittent fasting – let us talk about them.
- Food Habits
So a few days ago I bumped into this young man who is following the intermittent fasting technique and like every other follower of fasting, he had his own schedule based on 24 hours intermittent fasting. It is perfectly fine to choose any considerably easy or difficult fasting routine.
However, where he made a big mistake was the “food habits” section. He has been feeding off of fast food since he was a kid. I was actually fast food which was responsible of burying him beneath the heap of flesh and fats. Unfortunately, he thought that after getting into intermittent fasting he could lose weight in a mechanical way, without him first saying good bye to fast food.
People, get this – fast food is not going to change its impact on you even if you start fasting. Eating healthy but low calorie diet after in a respite during intermittent fasting will never be equal to eating fast food during those breaks. It is like starting a war against an enemy, and keep supplying him intermittently.
- Fear of Hunger
Well, this thing is from the primitive human times. Caveman used to have fear of hunger because to him, hunger was equal to loss of energy leading to his incapacity to hunt and then a certain death. Well, the caveman’s case was different. Caveman had to burn hundreds of calorie to chase an animal, kill him, fillet and get the flesh to eat. You do not have to do this; you buy food in bulk, store it, cook it whenever you need it and eat it.
The irony is that the worst case scenario that you might face is actually the easiest access to loads to calories (fast food and sugar-based food) and not the scarcity of food.
Thousands of years have wired us to have a fear of hunger. We think that if we remain hungry and starved for even a small duration of time, we will not remain able to perform our daily functions and we will get weak.
However, this is not the truth; intermittent fasting is based on the notion that a little and fairly prolonged hunger does not cause any harm to us, but only helps us reduce fats.
- Not Getting the Much Needed Nutrition
So this mistake is actually opposite to the first one. While there are the people who are afraid of starving themselves to death and who still keep consuming fast foods even during intermittent fasting, there are others who think that after years and years of bad food habits, now they have to punish themselves and there is no better punishment than intermittent fasting.
They believe in punishing their body, which is not a bad idea, but unfortunately the intensity of the punishment render them helpless with weakness, inability to go to work, studies or to perform daily functions and with some other type of health problems.
Remember people, the target is to lose the fats (to get the bodyline that you crave for), not the energy.
- Getting Over Ambitious
A girl goes to a trail thinking of doing 15 miles the very first day; she ends up leaving the trail disheartened with a big “I cannot do this!” written on her face only after 2 miles. A boy goes to the gym with the aim to reshape his body and starts with heavy weights and bigger sets. Hardly after a 15 minutes session he comes out of the gym breathing louder than a DC-10. Why? Because he wanted to make it to the summit on the very first day.
Let us not be hasty and let us not lose our grip on common sense. We gather kilos of after years and years of eating junk food and drinking fizzy drinks; can we lose all those fats within only a matter of a few weeks? No it is not possible. Over ambition is the beautiful cousin of ugly failed endeavor; do not fall for it.
- Obsession with Clocks
If are doing a set of a certain exercise, you have to invest your time and efforts in it, and you cannot be obsessed with running away from it. I mean how many wars have the men won while having an unnerving obsession to run away from the war? Those obsessed with clock treadmill junkies and intermittent fasting enthusiasts do nothing good to themselves.
Have you heard the buy once cry once proverb? Well, if you have, you must know that intermittent fasting is as rewarding as wise shopping. But please embrace the suck and tell yourself that if you gotta lose those greens, you gotta lose them. Likewise, if you have to spend a few hours without eating anything but highly anti-fats, you gotta do this.
There is no getting away from this. Being an “obsessed-with-clock-but-still-wanna-do-intermittent-fasting” person will not help you with your daily errands. You might be a student, an employee, a businessman, a son, a father or a husband and you have to take care of your daily priorities.
You cannot stay connected and focused if you keep looking at clock every once in a while and if you keep thinking about food. Very soon you will find yourself deprived of the energy and focus to perform your routine functions and you will end up with everyone around your complaining of your lack of attention. Getting fired is not a good idea pals; or what you might have to face real hunger and starvations. Do not force yourself to do it the hard way.
